My Son’s Basketball Bedroom Makeover is finally complete!
Most of the time when we think about moving, the timelines, boxes, and all the stuff we’re supposed to put in those boxes bog us down. But then comes the magic…decorating!
When we moved into our new home last fall, it was the perfect time for the kids to choose how they wanted to design their bedrooms. Now that they are at an age where they have preferences and new interests, it was exciting to see their visions come to life.
Sterling’s basketball-themed idea was inspired by an adorable basketball throw pillow from Pottery Barn Teen that instantly captured his attention. Once he saw it, he knew this was the theme he wanted to for his room. We began exploring various basketball decor and discovered so many ideas, which made us confident we could bring this vision to life. I was ready to turn his dream into a reality!
A Touch of Trim Detail
With the room serving as a blank canvas, we had some work ahead of us. I envisioned that an accent wall would truly enhance the basketball theme, and it certainly did! Since I had never created an accent wall before, we decided to hire a contractor for this portion of the project. However, after observing the process, I wouldn’t hesitate to try my hand at another bedroom wall. We followed these steps to complete the wall:
- First chose the trim you want to use on your wall. Here’s the one I used for Sterling’s room.
- Measure your wall space to decide on the number of boxes and the desired level of decoration.
- Using a laser level and pencil, outline where you want the boxes to go on the wall.
- Cut the trim pieces with a saw; a miter saw or table saw works well. If you lack a saw, you can have the trim cut at Lowe’s or Home Depot when you provide your measurements. It’s a very convenient service!
- Install the trim on the wall, securing it with a nail gun and brad nails. Sand down the edges where the pieces meet.
- One of the final steps is to apply wood filler to fill in all the nail holes and gaps between the wood to achieve a flush finish. Once dry, which happens quickly, use a sanding block to lightly smooth the wood filler.
- Finally, give the wall a quick wipe down and vacuum to prepare it for painting.
A Pop of Paint
The walls of Sterling’s room are painted in Snowbound by Sherwin-Williams. For the accent wall, I selected Tricorn Black by Sherwin-Williams to create a wall that would really pop. We absolutely love this color, and have used it throughout the house; in fact, the three doors in Sterling’s room are also Tricorn Black, which helps everything come together beautifully. We also had the trim of the accent wall painted, enhancing its sharp and clean appearance. What a transformation an accent wall can bring! I genuinely believe it elevates the room makeover to a whole new level, and it’s something that anyone can do!

Here’s a convenient paint kit that includes everything required for painting your accent wall. This kit includes all essentials for painting your accent wall, featuring brushes, rollers, painter’s tape, and a tray with liners. Whether you’re going for a bold, vibrant hue or a calming tone, this kit is designed to make the process smoother. Plus, with easy-to-follow instructions, even first-time painters can achieve a professional finish. Transforming your space has never been easier or more fun!

Adding the Artwork

I’ve always been delighted with my selections and the quality of artwork from Minted. This occasion was no exception. Surprisingly, I was amazed by the wide variety of basketball artwork available. We adored many of the prints and ended up choosing more than we actually needed! When placing my order, I selected the canvas-wrapped options for all the artwork. This choice enables the canvas print to be stretched, allowing the artwork to extend to the edge and wrap around the sides of the frame. I really love how Minted provides various frame options that can enhance the artwork beautifully. Additionally, they offer a range of sizes to suit any wall you may be decorating.
Bunk Beds for the Win!
Sterling was determined to have bunk beds in his new big boy room. After a thorough search for the ideal set, I discovered the Costa Storage Full-Over-Full Bunk Bed Pottery Barn Kids. The color and size were exactly what I had in mind. This full-sized, all-wood bunk bed includes two reversible, roomy drawers, ensuring your area stays organized and clutter-free. The bed also has a matching Costa Storage desk and a Costa Chest of Drawers. What makes this experience even more delightful than discovering the perfect furniture for your space is the white glove service. This includes delivery to your chosen room, unpacking and assembling items, as well as the removal and recycling of packaging materials. It truly simplifies the process of transforming your space!

Beddy’s to the Rescue!
Every time bunk beds pop into my head, I can’t help but envision the acrobatic nightmare of wrestling those fitted sheets into submission on the top bunk every time they need washed. Climbing up there feels like an Olympic sport, and getting the sheet to stay put is just wishful thinking. Has anyone else experienced this? It’s just the worst! It’s baffling that kids can’t sleep without turning their bed into a sheet tornado! That’s when I remembered Beddy’s, the ultimate bunk bed comforter heroes. They’re not just practical but stylish enough to jazz up any decor with their fabulous patterns and prints! You can use my code KRISTENS for 20% off your Beddy’s order.
The adorable basketball throw pillow, combined with my favorite Taylor Luxe Beddy’s Bedding, creates a cozy and welcoming atmosphere in the room! As a matter of fact, we all enjoy gathering on Sterling’s bunk bed for our evening story time and prayers!

The Little Details
I discovered my favorite pieces throughout Sterling’s room.
Though small in size, they contribute significantly to the joyful atmosphere of the space we have created.
Basketball Sports Hamper

This Pottery Barn Teen Basketball Sports Hamper is an ideal spot for storing stuffed animals or extra blankets. Its playful design adds a sporty flair to any room, seamlessly blending functionality with style. Paired with this ultra plush Jeremiah Brent x Loloi Bleecker Ivory / Charcoal Area Rug it creates a cohesive look that speaks to a love of the game. Whether placed in a bedroom or playroom, this hamper is sure to be a slam dunk in both form and function, making tidying up feel like a fun part of the daily routine.
Wooden Ball Holders

One of my favorite wall decorations that we’ve installed is these incredibly useful Wooden Ball Holders. Available in brushed charcoal or smoke grey, these holders can accommodate any sports ball your child may have. They provide an ideal sporty solution for maintaining an organized and clutter-free space.
Surprisingly, I discovered another option on Amazon that is just as appealing but comes at a fraction of the cost!
Score!
Bronze Bookends

These Bronze Bookends, shaped like basketballs, are ideal for holding all the basketball books that Sterling enjoys browsing through. A subtle yet stylish addition, they bring a touch of personality and a hint of sports enthusiasm to the room. The bronze hue enhances the wooden dresser’s earthy tones, creating a cozy space for Sterling to relax and enjoy his favorite sport.
Table Lamp

This Better Homes & Gardens 18″ Modern Dome Touch On/Off Brass Table Lamp is a fantastic addition to Sterling’s room. I adore the design and the price, while Sterling is thrilled that it features a touch-sensitive function!
Backlit Basketball Hoop

Lastly but certainly not least is Sterling’s most cherished feature of the room! This Backlit Basketball Hoop is the most impressive thing I’ve seen in quite some time, and it’s no surprise it’s a bestseller! We only permit him to use a silent basketball or his plush one to prevent any damage to the items in his room. The soft glow from the LED lights around the hoop creates a magical ambiance, especially during the evenings, when the room transforms into a cozy, inviting retreat. It’s truly the crown jewel of his personalized space, embodying his passion for basketball while seamlessly blending into the room’s aesthetic.
I hope that Sterling’s new room serves as a source of inspiration for your son’s bedroom. Transforming a child’s space can be such a fun experience, you may consider a different theme but you can always use these ideas to get you started!
